This is Teisho from our weekly zazen sitting at Hakone Gardens.
Zengo are given as part of the"teisho" (teaching) at the end of the zazen period.
The phrases are meant to encourage students to deepen their own understanding of the meaning by opening "shin" (heart/mind).

一日不作 一日不食 ichi jitsu nasa zareba ichi jitsu kura wazu いちにちなさざれば、いちにちくらわず "If you don't work, you don't eat" This sitting was on mother's day. Rev Ito also talked about his memory of his mother from World War II.
